"Message from the SBTCC President"

Dear Current and Past Members,

On January 19, the Club held the AGM. A number of serious issues were discussed. Amongst them was the decline in membership, particularly since the introduction of the "breed ban" in Ontario. Since over 60% of our membership comes from Ontario, it is obvious we have a problem.

At the first Public Hearings seven years ago, the CKC announced that there were just under 1000 SBT's registered with them, of which 670 were from Ontario. Last April at the second set of Public Hearings, the CKC announced that now there were only 111 SBT's and Staffordshire Terriers registered from Ontario. This dramatic reduction in the breed has caused a number of problems for the club and its membership:

**-our magazine, always dependent on member submissions, has been sent very little to publish.
**-with membership decline, the fees, which mainly go to publishing and mailing the magazine, have not been keeping up with costs.
**-the fees, themselves, were too expensive for what we provide.

After much discussion the following was decided:

**-that the membership fee be reduced to $25 /year.
**-those who have paid the original $50 fee will be given two years’
**-that other communications will be through the web page, Staffordcanada, and our Facebook page.

It is hoped that in the future the membership will return. We are in worrisome times. In some areas of the country breed bans have been reversed. In others, they are being introduced. In Ontario, there is both change and political action from within the legislature. We all hope that the governing party will be changed, but this is not certain.
What is certain is the fact that if current conditions continue, the future of the club is in serious doubt. We need your help, your membership, your input, and your articles for the annual.

Please take this opportunity to renew your membership. The club needs you. But more especially, the dogs need you.

Pat your dogs for me,

"Bill 16 Update"

With McGuinty's prorogation of the Ontario Legislature Bill 16, as well as all other unfinished business before the house, died.  Legislation to amend DOLA will have to be re-introduced when the Ontario Legislature is called back into session by the new leader of the Liberal Party and is defeated by a vote of Confidence in the Legislature.  The party election for this person will take place on January 26, 2013.  The newly elected leader/Premier will then recall the Legislature in early to mid-February.  As this will be a new sitting a new budget for the province will have to presented.  This will give the two opposition parties who are in the majority the opportunity to defeat the Liberal Government and a new election will be called.  This election will be held in late April or early May if the events unfold as forecast.

Both Randy Hillier PC and Cheri DiNovo NDP, cosigners of Bill 16, have reiterated their positions to re-introduce a Private Member's Bill to take out the Breed Specific clauses in DOLA.  Hopefully, with a new party in power at Queen's Park, this new legislation will include the amendments that were presented to the committee reviewing Bill 16 that were voted down by the Liberals on the committee.  It is also possible that the party forming the new government will introduce the new legislation itself rather than waiting for a new Private Members Bill.

Everything hinges on two things happening:  one, the defeat of the current Liberal Government and two, the winning of the election by either the Progressive Conservative or New Democratic Party.  If the Liberals win the election we will be back to where we were seven years ago, with another four years to wait until the next election.

It is imperative that all members take the initiative to support the party of their choice to help defeat the Liberals in the election.  Some funds are available for political action in support of legislation that will bring to an end the Breed Specific Portion of the current DOLA legislation.

The Club and especially our Dogs need your unyielding support in this matter.

"2012 Staffie Walk in Claresholm, AB - August 11, 2012"

Let's make it bigger and better this year!

I live in a little town called Claresholm.  We are about 1 hour south of Calgary.

This is our 7th year doing the Walk.  I am very excited this year.  I am hoping to have more than 50 Staffies this year.  Last year was a huge success with 42 Staffies and 60 people.

After the walk there will be a BBQ at my home with lots of great conversation about the breed.  It always amazes me when I see everyone in my back yard talking about their Staffies and their love of the breed.
Last year our dogs were great ambassadors for the bully breeds.  Each year as we walk many of the dogs on the side lines were barking and behaving badly.  The Staffies paid no attention to the misbehaving dogs.

After the parade day, many of us from town were stopped and people were commenting on how well-behaved our dogs were.  They could not believe there were so many bully dogs in one stop and no dog fights.

If you are interested in joining us for our walk and BBQ after, please contact me:

Jackie Liversuch    403 625 5565

I need everyone to be at my house by 10:30am Aug 11.  I do have this event on Facebook if you would like to join also. You can find it here:

I encourage all owners of bully breeds to educate people in their community and be breed ambassadors.

Here are some pictures from last year's walk

"President's Message - Bill 16"

"Sure I am of this, that you have only to endure to conquer."  (Winston Churchill)

Well, people, were you actually surprised with what the Liberals did in Committee on May 9?

Their mistaken pride is getting in the way of fixing a bad law. We have to persuade people to write to their MPP's, whether a Liberal or not.

Many in that party do support the changes but the powers within the party will not let them express their own views. We have to give these members our support to speak out.

It is still going to be a fight, and perhaps a long fight but it is one that we must continue.  Our dogs and our breed depend on it.

Please write to Mr. McGuinty or make an appointment to speak to your MPP.  Mr. Hillier has asked us to do this.

Pat your dogs for me,
